Sound is one of the major sensations perceived by humans. The human ear detects sound frequencies usually between the range 12Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). Sound waves need a medium of transmission, it cannot travel in vacuum. For instance, people would not be able to communicate orally on the moon because there is no medium of sound transmission there.
Sound is one of the most indispensible sensations experienced by humans. Without sound, we would not have been able to communicate with each other. In order to communicate with each other, we need to speak or hear what the other person. Written words came much later after oral communication was developed. Humans needed sound to articulate written words. In ancient cultures, most of the literature was passed on orally from one generation to the other.
The spoken word was given much importance. None of this could have been accomplished without sound. Even animals communicate with the help of sound, though they are not articulate like humans. After speech, the biggest gift that sound gave us was music.
Walter Pater said that music is the purest form of art. In ancient times, bards used to travel from place to place, reciting poetry set to certain tune. In later times, travelling minstrels and troubadours used to travel from place to place singing their songs. Music was an important tool in the early twentieth century in America with the advent of jazz, a musical form that cut across all racial boundaries in the country.
